What is there to tell about yourself?

What to say?

Years ago, when I started hunting for a job after I completed my studies, the most irritating question I used to feel was “Tell me something about yourself.” The first thing that used to come to my mind was, “What the hell have I given my resume for?”
.

Of course, resume said it all but they wanted to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth.
.

This question still haunts the interviews.
.

Most of the times it comes from an attractive young woman on the other side and one cannot help smiling in mind thinking this question would have suited best if the occasion were of a blind date with her.
.

Now the ball is in your court. The interviewer’s piercing gaze and raised ears demand a reply. Even though it sounds simple, you are likely to fumble for an answer especially when you happen to be a shy, reserved, down-to-earth, self-depreciating person.
.

To find out what great people or celebrities have to say about themselves, I dived into Twitter and checked some high profiles. It took me by surprise that Barack Obama chose to describe himself as Dad, husband, President, citizen. Washington, DC. So modest it sounds, is not it?
.

Common folks however cannot afford such humility. A guy who appears for an interview is pretty much of a product himself. A product needs to be well-advertised to prompt a consumer to buy it. So do you, to be hired by an employer. Therefore do not hold back yourself. It is the time to speak up with confidence for your own sake.
.

Even though there is nothing much to tell about yourself, whatever you are telling them, try to say it in an interesting way.
.

This is the question you are most likely to face when you are attending an interview for a BPO. The way you express your thoughts and communicate matters for your prospective employer. They also are paying attention to your use of grammar and your pronunciation in case communication skills matter for the job you are applying for.
.

So even if you don’t prefer to talk much about yourself, be prepared to answer such a question for sure. But before your mind reflexes to regurgitate the details you have provided in your resume, hold on!
.

Start by introducing yourself. Do not say “Myself so and so.” Say “I am…..” and then talk about something which your resume does not mention. Like your experience with your first job, your aspirations, skills and what made you apply for current job.
.

Talking about hobbies is fine but don’t go as far as discussing the actor you are diehard fan of and your favorite food. Come back!
.

Telling about yourself doesn’t mean to brag or gloat about yourself. Also, this question is not thrown at you to peep into your personal life. So don’t get yourself started. Avoid talking about personal miseries. Don’t get inspired by reality talent shows where candidates telling something about themselves make the “judges” cry and get selected. Your interview would not end up exchanging tissues to wipe tears rolling down each-others’ cheeks.
.

Practice brings perfection. If telling about yourself doesn’t come naturally to you in interviews, prepare an answer for it and learn it by heart and make sure it does not sound crammed up. Be confident and sound natural. That would lead you naturally to the rest of the conversation with the interviewer.
